Solving Long Stable AES50 Runs
The video discusses the challenges and limitations of using long stable AES50 cables. The speaker highlights issues such as pops and drops that can occur with AES50 and the vulnerability of the protocol to electrostatic discharge. Shielded cables are recommended to minimize these issues, but stability is not guaranteed. The video explores alternative solutions like the Klark Teknik DN 9620 for conversion to fiber and longer cable lengths. The speaker expresses frustration with the limitations and proposes testing AES50 cables beyond their maximum capacity to gain confidence in their reliability. They demonstrate successful audio transmission using a shielded Cat5e cable, indicating the po...

    I would have liked to see a a close-up of the bottom of the Sonicare - they have so many models, I’m not sure if the one you have has the same bottom as mine (HX6521/01 bought in 2020.) Since my problem was the toothbrush turning on by itself and the front button not shutting it off, I had to pry off the bottom and stop it - gave it a cleaning to get rid of the condensation and it works OK. I didn’t mess up the bottom enough to stop if from working.

    I want to share an experience i encountered in an outdoor event ( 2 subs and 2 jbl line arrays on each side they were same height and arrays were put on high with a pole mount maybe a max height of 8-9 feet as the subs were some high model style anyways . My concern or question is the subs had no issues I was able to hear them from far and close distance but the for the mids and high frequencies I was able to hear strange things happening to the sounds ; it was like when the wind blow the sound faded drastically almost felt like the sound was muted and only bass was on . I was maybe 40 feet away from the stage ( there was much crowd to even block the sound or view . Do you know of the why this happened or nothing like these has happened we were in a park they rented the power generator and it was plain day nothing like running so much lights . Will these also happen it it wasn’t line array and more like the normal speakers that have a wider tweeter horn ? This was not my system but a local private event .

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 3 дня назад

      No screw as in there never was because the design is different or no screw as in, you can see where it was but it is missing? If missing. that screw is probably in there somewhere. Since there is a magnet in the middle of that coil, I will bet the screw is stuck to the magnet. The scree is a metric 2mm screw that is 8mm long pan head Philips drive. If the screw is gone, then you also may need to find the triangular yoke that it holds in as well. Where are ya located? I may have a screw and yoke I could send you from a dead unit.

For larger outside venues speaker placement is always a question. We also play with the EQing to try and optimize the punch. Do you have a video yet that shows how to optimize drum and bass coming from tracks and also talks about speaker placement, depending on the type of venue, whether they’re outside or inside. We are also interested not just in placement but speaker types if they also have an impact in optimizing our base and drum track sound. Thank you for your help.

    Unfortunately IMO, most guys don't think like Dave, who is doing aux fed to get to rid of low frequency garbage. They do it for that reason, but what they really like about the method is now they can go BOOM BOOM BOOM with the subs and impress everybody. This is not the music doing that, it is the mixer. When I see live videos of bands who don't have huge low end on their records but have BOOM BOOM BOOM in their shows, then it's clear it's a useful technique that's been abused by mixers to the point that it's now the norm.

    How to fix leaking of coffee

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 9 дней назад

      If you are getting raw grinds in the tray that are not wet, probably need to do a good cleaning, the transition hopper moves the grinded beans to the hot water injector but if sometimes if not clean, the hoper can't move fully into position and the grinds leak down. Gotta clean up and all around the removable hopper If you are leaking actual coffee, that is a disassembly adventure that is messy. They are pretty good about warranty and fixing, I would try sending back before doing a take apart

    I would enjoy a follow up video discussing headroom. As audio engineers we all know that it's best to run any system at somewhat less than 100% of its capacity, but how much headroom is actually necessary, and where do you start to see diminishing returns from adding system capacity at a fixed volume level? If you want to mix at about 95dBSPL you want a system that is capable of throwing more than that, but how much more? 105dB? 120? 130? At some point you're just wasting money, but I've always just kind of estimated how much headroom is ideal and never gotten really scientific with it.

    pardon my ignorance, ethernet/network switches are incompatible w/ the data transmission protocols in pro-audio? (these days switches introduce latency under 0.1ms)

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 11 дней назад

      There are many audio over network formats used for pro audio. Some are Ethernet compatible, some are not. AES50 is a layer 1 and does not use the Ethernet frame structure. Latency added by switches and such once a signal is digital tends to be very low The issue is in the conversion from analog to digital and back to analog where conversions to and from more complex layer 2 and 3 Ethernet adds more latency than converting to and from layer 1. The issue is that later 1, while having very low latency conversions, also does not have all the the features and compatibilities and protections of the higher levels en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_audio_network_protocols

    DAVE !!!! Why are you not measuring Total Harmonic Distortion ... Freq response is 1 thing.. THD is another ... I'm disappointed that your experiments did NOT take distortion into account, other than clipping, Which is audible. ... THD will impact the 'listenability" and ear fatigue over time.

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 12 дней назад

      Total harmonic distortion is useful and important for low volume and mid volume and anything that isn't driving an amp really hard. Once you get into clipping your total harmonic distortion goes through the roof. This test is all about seeing which amp can deliver more power before it goes into massive distortion IE clipping. As far as Fidelity and listenability and other aspects those will vary greatly for manufacture to manufacture as well. This test was more answering the question " doesn't app need to be big or heavy in order to be loud and deliver more power?" Kind of like taking two different cars to the drag strip to see which one has better acceleration and top speed is what this test is about. A total harmonic distortion test is more like a test of which amp has a smoother ride.

    • @sambaker7255
      @sambaker7255 12 дней назад

      @@DaveRat Hi Dave.. I would suggest that THD is very important especially at high volumes. Yes clipping is overdriving the amp (well the power supply) but If THD is high then all you are doing is amplifying the distortion along with the signal. BUT..... of course speaker distortion will eclipse THD from any amp so perhaps it's an academic discussion at best. As you know I am old school... for me an amplifier should be rated at rated RMS, 8 ohms 20-20K and as low THD as possible. Now i know current music as a much higher sub 20cps component which is the domain of Subs. The issue of "head room" or peak output is really a function of Power supply to the output chip set. Not enough power and the system will clip and loose frequency response. Your demonstrations and testing are always right on, so don't take my comments as discounting your methods...Just looking to have the conversation.. Thanks

    • @DaveRat
      @DaveRat 12 дней назад

      I try and test the things that are not readily available in the spec sheets. I believe the THD of the amps I tested is spec'ed either the same or nearly the same. And since they are trusted manufacturers we don't have any reason to believe their specs are not accurate or close to accurate. THD is a widely used and pretty universally standardized spec. For those kinds of tests there are other people out there, My adventures are about finding the hidden things and misunderstood aspects and audio Gremlins that people tend to overlook

There's 500 comments, but you replied to most, so let's say 250 people. The price for a Sonicare ranges from $30-$90+. So lets just use $50 as a rough guess for an average. That's $12,500 that you collectively saved people. But wait. How many views do you have? 117k. I can't imagine that people are coming here if they don't have one or aren't intending to fix it. So let's grab a safe number, a bit less than half the people that watched the video attempted to fix and were able to fix. 50,000 people. Dude. That's freakin' $2,500,000! Two point five million dollars that you likely saved people!!! Could be more! Who knows! Regardless, whatever the true amount is, you have clearly made a huge impact on people's collective finances. Super cool!

    Since we use digital “snake box/stagebox,,,what i understand is the heart of the system switch from the console to the stagebox,and the console become the “remote” just like midi controler…but i might be wrong😅

      Depends on the console. Some consoles have the brains inside the surface, some have the brains in external racks and the surface is a remote

    Hi Dave, I love your analogies for conveying engineering concepts with intuition. I was hoping you could apply your science communication skills to a simple question that has been bothering me for ages: In power engineering, we use a transformer at the source and to step up voltage (and step down current) to maximize the efficiency of long distance power transmission. In audio engineering, we do the opposite; step down the source’s voltage and step up the current to maximize the efficiency of long distance signal transmission. How would you explain in an intuitive way to, say, a high school physics student, why power vs audio engineers do the opposite? Thanks, Brian

      Interesting! Maybe a bit of clarification in that audio does not step down voltage and up current per se, but rather things like mics are typically already low voltage higher current right off the voice coil. I will think on this further but off the top of my head I would say the power transmission is driven by minimizing loss and the goal is to transmit max watts. For audio the driving factor is optimizing frequency response, minimizing HF loss and with the exception of post power ams, loss of voltage or watts is not a significant concern. Losing 1/2 the power of an audio signal is no big deal as long as we stay above the noise floor. So... For audio signals, low impedance is critical. Our enemy is capacitance. For power generation higher impedances rolling off high frequencies I advantageous as it helps filter noise. So narrowing it down, audio wants low impedance which is a high current low voltage scenario compared tolong distance power generation, high impedance low current is optimal. But,,, audio does use the power generation concept for 70 volt lines, where we do exactly the same thing as power, transform up to high voltage and transform back down at the speaker. But it does not sound great So from that perspective, if transmission of power is the goal, high voltage low current If transmission of accurate wide bandwidth signal is the primary goal, then lower impedances are preferred, which ruslts in higher currents and lower voltage, Great question and will ponder and simplify

      @DaveRat Weirdly enough, because I am on the gulf coast, I switched to an XR18 and a pad because it is more reliable around here than potentiometers. But I never kid myself about the sound. Is it good enough? Yes, but does it sound and feel as good? Nope l. But the reliability is fantastic. Just what I didn't expect.

    would be awesome to see a custom prototype at 140m-150m layed out with no joins, id be amazed if you couldn't get a solid 140m signal! purely to fun of course, 130m is going to be massive for most gigs out there, no one wants to run FOH over 100m from the stage :P

      May e check out this vid where I go into more depth and use the final production cable. It still has extensions but hits 140. Mathematically and measurement wise, the cat6 couplers only cost about .4% in length or so. So maybe 1.4 meters of length lost per coupler. In this other vid I do ESD test and test with a cable certification tester as well www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DbQXOXWuxCGA&ved=2ahUKEwidk9P6s-2GAxXeKUQIHVdrCLQQwqsBegQIExAG&usg=AOvVaw1jPWndJ3Pd7YiV1eWA8rlw
